IN 1880 HENRY HOUGHTON,
the owner of Riverside Press, Boston, formed the publishing
company Houghton & Mifflin with his partner George Mifflin. Just three years later, by 1883, they had published
the most successful posthumous compendium of Hawthorne's works in a 12 volume series, illustrated by some of America's finest illustrators and etchers
of the period. The following original etchings are among the best from the 1883 series.
